Pottermore ShopI mentioned last week that Pottermore is set to open to the public on April 1st, unless it is a cruel April Fools day joke to potter fans.  It seems the Pottermore team is hoping to dispel the fears that it might be a joke by releasing part of the site (a part that wasn’t previously even available to beta users) today!  The Pottermore Shop, where we can finally purchase Harry Potter e-books, is now available in the US and Britain (with other regions and languages coming soon).

I do almost all of my reading these days on a Kindle or Kindle related app because I love the portability of it.  It has been extremely annoying for years that my favorite book series isn’t available on Kindle, because they are the books I’d most like to have with me at all times.

When I travel, I tend to need to bring several books with me because with all the extra reading time I tend to plow through a few books, and I just can’t carry the entire Harry Potter series in my carryon, so you can be sure I will be picking up the Complete Harry Potter Collection (for $57.54) very soon. When will the Beta END?!

I’ve talked before about Pottermore, the website by J.K. Rowling and TH_NK.  Well according to the Pottermore Insider blog, the site will go live on April 1st, it isn’t clear if this means that the ebooks will finally be available on that date too, although I hope so.  Of course, April 1st is well known to be April Fools Day.  And Rowling herself has been known to acknowledge the fun of an April Fools Joke (Fred and George Weasley were “of course” born on April Fools Day), so announcing an April 1st release date could be a very cruel joke.  Here’s hoping it’s true!

I don’t know if the people from TH_NK read my post about cheating on Pottermore by purposeful failing at potion making, or one of the many other online forums posting about the issue, but a few days after my post went live, they posted on the Pottermore Insider blog that potions are being tweaked.

Today Sara Moton commented on my previous post to say that they stopped giving a point for failing.  I have logged in tonight to test it and indeed, it is true.  TH_NK has fixed this logic flaw, and it’s great. Continue reading →

UPDATE 9/14/2011: TH_NK has updated Pottermore so that you no longer earn house points when you fail to brew a potion, this simple fix nullifies the cheating method mentioned below, Hurrah!

I’m going to preface what I’m going to say below with the statement that I am not putting this post up as an invitation to cheat on pottermore.  I would have sent this message privately to the Pottermore developers, however I could find no place on pottermore.com, insider.pottermore.com, @pottermore or pottermore on facebook where I could send a message to the devs.  The closest I could find was the Beta Feedback button, which presents a feedback form that lets you rank a page on a scale of how much you like it, but it has no comment field, no way to introduce a comment for the devs.

My hope is that by posting this publicly on my blog, the Pottermore devs will find this post and fix the issue (and perhaps add a method of commenting privately to the devs).
